🦠 Nassau's Cyclospora Cases Are Climbing

If your stomach's been off this summer, you're not alone — and it might not be the heat. Nassau County health officials are tracking a rise in cyclosporiasis, a nasty little parasite infection that's been working its way through the county's produce aisles and into more than a few coolers.
The numbers: 17 cases so far this year, with 11 of those showing up in June alone. Compare that to just 10 cases for all of last year, and you can see why the county's Department of Health is paying closer attention. Cyclospora usually hitches a ride on imported produce — think cilantro, basil, snow peas, pre-washed salad mixes — and causes watery diarrhea that can drag on for weeks, along with cramps, fatigue and a serious loss of appetite.
The fix is annoyingly simple and easy to skip: wash your hands before and after handling produce, and give fruits and vegetables a real rinse before they hit your plate — even the pre-washed stuff. Small habit, fewer miserable weeks.

✈️ Pilot Walks Away After Wild Gear-Up Landing in Shirley

Sunday night got interesting out at Brookhaven Calabro Airport. A small Cessna came in for a landing around 10:20 p.m. with its front landing gear refusing to cooperate, forcing the pilot into a belly landing right there on the runway.
The pilot, a 54-year-old from Lindenhurst, was flying solo — no passengers aboard, thankfully. Suffolk police said the front gear never fully extended and was leaking fluid, which meant the scene had to be secured before anyone could get close. The Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Company took the pilot to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk for a precautionary evaluation.
The FAA's local district office has been notified and will look into what went wrong with the gear. All things considered, this is the good version of a scary headline: metal got scraped up, nobody else did.

🚸 Rockville Centre Pedestrian Critically Hurt in Crash

A routine Wednesday morning commute turned serious in Rockville Centre this week. Just before 9:42 a.m., a 24-year-old man was crossing at North Village Avenue and Lakeview Avenue when he was struck by a westbound SUV.
Police say the driver, an 84-year-old woman behind the wheel of a 2024 Toyota RAV4, stayed at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation. The pedestrian was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition as of this writing.
No charges have been announced. It's a hard reminder for all of us — drivers and walkers alike — to slow down and stay alert at intersections, especially with more foot traffic out and about this time of year.
