You know the feeling. You walk into a showroom and before you've had a chance to look at anything, someone is already crossing the floor toward you with a smile that's really just a countdown. Mike doesn't do that. Walk into The Corner Cabinet and the guy who greets you is the guy who owns it, and the first thing out of his mouth isn't a number. It's a question. What are you looking for? What colors do you like? Why'd you pick that one? He's genuinely trying to get in your head, because in his experience most people walk in saying they want something only because somebody else has it.

Mike was a carpenter his entire life, and a custom cabinet maker inside of that. What ended the physical side of it was a broken back and a massive heart attack. He tried keeping the construction company running anyway, but the guys weren't doing things the way he wanted, so he'd jump in to fix it himself and pay for it later. Cabinetry was the smarter move, and honestly the happier one. Kitchens, as he puts it, are usually an exciting thing in someone's life. He gets to do the design work, he knows both sides of the job, and because he knows what problems are coming he can head them off before they ever show up in your house.

Inside you'll find kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, vanities, stone countertops, and door hardware, basically anything a kitchen or bath needs. What you won't find is the throwaway import stuff that's everywhere right now. Mike won't carry it, and it costs him business from contractors who want it, and he's fine with that, because when it falls apart in two years he's the one holding the bag. What he does sell will give you twenty, thirty, forty years if you take care of it. He'll also tell you things a salesman wouldn't. All the cabinet boxes are half inch plywood and they're all built the same, no matter what anybody tells you. What you're actually buying is the door and the drawer front. That's why he won't quote you a rough number over the phone, and it's also why he doesn't push roll outs and extras you don't need.

The motto on the wall says your dream kitchen is more affordable than you think, and he means it as a business strategy, not a slogan. He's not going to get rich off any one kitchen, so he'd rather design something you'll actually love inside the budget you actually have, because then you tell ten people. For the next 60 days he's running 25% off, with an additional 5% for teachers and first responders on top of that.

It's family owned in the literal sense. His son works there, his wife helps out, and that's the whole operation. Down the road he'd like to open another location, maybe two or three, having done seven at one point in a previous life with partners. This time it's slow and steady and on his own, so he can bounce between stores, help everybody, and keep families fed.

Long Islanders have been hearing about Joe & The Juice's arrival since the Danish chain bought up two storefronts back in October of last year, and now one of them is officially open. The new cafe sits at 1579 Northern Boulevard in Manhasset, right next to a Sweetgreen, and it marks the brand's first Long Island location.

The menu leans into what the chain is known for: health drinks and juices, but also coffee, matcha and sandwiches for anyone who wants something more substantial than a smoothie. It's the kind of spot that's built a cult following in cities for its fast counter service and its playlist as much as its menu.

A second location is already planned for Woodbury, so if Manhasset isn't your regular stop, you won't be waiting long for a closer option. For now, the Northern Boulevard shop is the one drawing the curious and the caffeine deprived alike.

After years of planning meetings, renderings and public hearings, Riverhead's downtown revitalization is finally moving into construction. Town officials say six connected projects are now underway, from a new Town Square to a riverfront amphitheater, and residents who've watched the plans circulate for years are finally seeing shovels in the ground.

The centerpiece is a nearly 70,000 square foot, five story Tapestry by Hilton hotel planned for the eastern edge of the Town Square, which the Town Board unanimously approved after a contentious review. Officials expect the hotel's foundation permit within the next week or two, with an opening targeted for late 2028. Alongside the hotel, the project list includes an adaptive playground, East Main Street streetscape improvements and a structured parking garage.

It's a long timeline, but for a downtown that's spent years being talked about more than built, watching real construction start is its own kind of milestone. Expect detours and equipment downtown for a while, but also expect a very different Riverhead waterfront by the time it's finished.

Suffolk County police are investigating after a man was found dead inside a camper Sunday morning at Southaven County Park Campground in Shirley. Officers responded around 7:30 a.m. to what witnesses described as a chaotic scene, with people pounding on the camper door before police and fire crews arrived.

Investigators have said the death appears to be non-criminal in nature, and an autopsy is being performed to determine the cause. Police had not released the man's name as of Sunday afternoon.

Fellow campers at Southaven described the man as a friendly, helpful presence who camped there year round, the kind of neighbor who'd offer a hand setting up a site before you even asked. The loss has clearly hit the small community of regulars who call the campground home for much of the year.
